CHAPTER TEN

Evangelical Feminist Claims from Theology and from Ideas of Fairness and Justice

Some egalitarian claims are based on theological doctrines or on the general ideas of fairness and justice. For instance, doesn’t the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers show that both men and women should be able to fill leadership roles in the church? And is the complementarian claim about parallels of subordination within the Trinity really valid? Might there not be a kind of “mutual submission” among the members of the Trinity? And wasn’t Jesus’ submission to His Father only for His time on the earth in any case?

With regard to questions of fairness, how can it be fair to prohibit a better-qualified woman from being a pastor just because she is a woman? And is it really fair to allow women to assume leadership roles on the mission field but prohibit them from taking these same roles here in the United States?

It is questions such as these that we consider in this chapter.
